  • ..Useless morons.. ..Your "mechanic" is so stupid not to realize at 5:20, he could not use any tool like that! Did you ever hear about an impact driver?? Something like 1000Nm? Well, is made by germans as well, and DOES unscrew properly thigh screw. It is meant to be like that! Idiots.. Couple of minutes later, voila! You don't deserve german cars!

  • "Timing chain guides?" THIS is why DOHC doesn't belong on V engines. Don't get me wrong...I love a high revving DOHC engine, but they are a poor match for a cross plane V8.

  • I’m wondering if BMW and other car manufacturers engineers have dialogs with people like Johnny who deal with the real world Engine design or are they just Paper and computer idiots

    PaulPaulPrieš 24 dienas
  • It looks like BMW has been systemically exploiting a weakness that they knew or ought to have known existed on all timing chain driven engines with plastic guides and or defective hydraulic tensioners, and tensior blade. This isn't what engineering is about. This is exactly how you do not engineer anything of the kind of critical function these parts are intended to perform. Doesn't this show perfectly the myth. Even BMW diesel engines have no life that one is entitled to expect from a diesel engine because they have built in the weakness and even mandated that the weak part does not require service for the life of the vehicle. I suppose that means the kind of 129,000 mile life for a diesel engine because it was designed to throw its chain when the twee weak parts break. Let's say the argument is that that is not what BMW are doing? Then we must ask ourselves why they did not design a fail-safe system that does not sacrifice the engine in such catastrophic way when these timing parts fail. BMW treated the N47 engine owners terribly, putting them through hoops to have their smashed engine diagnosed when it will not even turn. Why are owners forced down that dead-end road? The dealer seems to be able to take a lot of money to diagnose these catastrophic failures; that should not be the onus of an owner, when these parts are not madated for any service.

  • Very interesting and entertaining. However, it comes to mind that if you edited this to cover only the problem issues on the 740! and perhaps talk more about the cam chain failures and the abysmal way BMW treated those owners, that would be quite a good cause of a stir. That's the only way to deal with some companies. Its' when people understand that BMW quality is really just a myth.

  • Car manufacturers were taking the piss. They kept making their cars more and more complicated instead of trying to find a simper solution like electric cars. Sure they have their issues, but the engine is way, way, way more simpler and have far fewer parts. No water pump, no radiator, no radiator fan, no alternator...so many parts that are no longer needed. Car manufacturers should have gone for that at least 20 years ago. Their internal combustion engines have reached such level of complexity that the only way to improve them any further is to get rid of them.

I've narrowed myself down to 5 series cars - can't help myself. I love them. I've had Jags, Mercs Porsches and 5 series cars are my favorite by far. I still have Jags - mostly V12s and they are BY FAR the most reliable and easiest to look after. Jags were beyond compare 30 years ago parti ly in ride quality. I still like them but the 5 series cars have me in their spell. They're more than a match for the Jag but will still drive you mad

  • Ok I thought I have seen it all! Car Ninja? More like Car Neanderthal!! If I ever saw one of my mechanics removing a pulley like that I would fire him on the spot!! If I ever saw a so called mechanic do that to one of my cars I would be in jail for assault! It's amazing what people call mechanics these days. What's worse is that he thinks it's ok to put this on LTworlds for all to see, like it's acceptable. If my car was in that garage I would be straight down with my tow truck to pick it up! Personally I would have used a magnetic inductor (NOT A BLOWTORCH!) to heat up the flange and used a puller to pull it off, maybe it's because I'm not a hack!

  • Jonny's odyssey with the crank bolt reminds me of when I was a young amateur mechanic trying to do my own timing belt on my 1989 Honda Accord. I didn't have an impact gun and had to resort to a 1/2 inch breaker bar plugged into an extension and the socket, with a 4 foot pipe over the breaker bar, using a spare jackstand as a fulcrum. I put the left front wheel back on, put the car on the ground, shifted the transmission into 5th gear, pulled the e brake hard, and laid into that pipe with all my might. I ended up dragging the rear wheels a few inches before that stupid bolt finally gave in.

  • Why would anyone be a car mechanic? - I understand the fascination with twirly, swirling metal parts and horsepower BUT the potential for heartache and hassle is almost infinite. Hours of repair/build time and 1 second to destroy an engine. Respect to those that are the good guy mechanics.

    Stuart HossackStuart HossackPrieš 2 mėnesius
  • That was a totally unnecessary 'repair'. I'm Amazed Johnny (an E38 fan) was even willing to do that job. Guess Hoovie paid quite a lot so he did it anyway. The E38 was my first car and I've replaced the engine in mine before because I drove in a 'puddle'. 2 piston rods were totally broken and 1 was bent. It ran for like 20 miles LMAO. Sounded like hell itself was rolling down the street. I bought a engine from a old gentleman on the E38 forums in 2008 for $2100 with 59k miles (e38.org was awesome for a youngin). I did the work with my cousin who is a German specialized tech. I didn't know much so depended on his help. It took a good 5 months before first start up :). Even after hydro locking the engine at 170k miles (I drove the hell out of that thing XD). We took the old locked up engine apart and inspected the chain guides. They turned out to be fine. It had the chain rattle but were totally ok. Those engines are rock solid beasts. As long as you don't run the M62TU engine dry of oil the guides and chains will outlast the rest of the car, even at the factory oil change interval. Also that alternator is not $1000. I did mine for $180 after a local alternator shop rebuilt it. I only had to do it once and that was in 2012. I did have to put in new antifreeze (only use the blue) but that was no biggy. It needed a flush any how. FYI only use liqui moly special tech 5w30 on these engines. The rattle is almost non existent. You might occasionally hear it at start up. The ABS and the cup holder was really the most annoying things about the E38's. Especially that dashboard cup holder that pops out. I've replaced that thing like 4 times. I can personally vouch that the E38 is an awesome vehicle. For a first car it was very daunting and people thought a 19 year old buying such an expensive vehicle was dumb but I did get a ton of attention. I bought the 2001 black 740i sport (sep 2000 build date) from a bmw dealer at 19 years old in January of 2005 with my first job out of high school :3. Love the hell out of that thing. I did sell it in 2014 for $2500 but bought it back lol. I don't drive it too much these days. I've owned 4 bmw's and they are all in great shape. Won't use any other car brand. I do all maintenance and major repairs myself. Except on my i3. That thing is beyond me. My next bmw is an f10 M5 :) first M car. 2016 M5 competition certified preowned. I only buy from franchise dealers

    oprimeoprimePrieš 2 mėnesius
  • I am a DIYer and even I would have told him to go with the impact before the breaker bar, even if he has to take more parts off to get clearance. I wonder what brand of breaker bar also to break like that, harbor freight? Mechanic seems like a very likable guy though..

  • Most likely a big waste of time and money. The guides showed only normal wear for 80k and he had to pick at the liner to actually create a defect. When the oil is properly maintained a 4.4 can go 175k + easily without timing guide replacement and although it is an interference engine they give warning long before complete failure such as noise or plastic chips in the oil.

  • You need a better "car ninja". There's a simple fix for these problems. Replace the thermostat with a lower temp part so it runs at 90C instead of 100C. BMW only did that for emissions reasons. But running these V8s at such high Temps just kills the plastics and rubber parts under the hood. Irregular oil changes also cause these guides to fail prematurely. I have the dreaded N62 in my X5 and it's much much happier at 90C. The valve guide Seals are still healthy at 180k. I've had two BMWS with the infamous M62 and they were great engines. Change your oil regularly and lower your temperature and youre good.
